Speculative Garment Series

2021

My "Speculative Garment Series" was begun during my MacDowell residency in 2021. Made by taking shirts apart and reassembling these parts of used garment into single multi-limbed garments, these are meant to be worn “collectively” by individuals who must move together to avoid ripping or ruining the garments. These works express the need for solidarity and collective power to address the global garment industry. By sewing parts of many clothes together I imagine a collective body comprised of multiple limbs. This garment is functional – it can be worn, but, by a group of individuals who must move together in concert. This work is a metaphor for how we must cooperate and collaborate to make change. This is a garment for the future we can imagine.
