Piece·work

[ˈpēsˌwərk]

NOUN

  1. Work paid for according to the amount produced.

  2. Workers are exploited in order to provide consumers with cheap clothing.

“Piece Work” explores the labor of garment workers hiding in our clothes. By disassembling clothes into their constituent pieces and then re-accumulating these pockets, sleeves, collars and button-holes into sections of “like” parts, I seek to reveal the labor embedded in our clothing.  This work also brings attention to the repetitive daily tasks of the workers who make our clothes and raises questions about how clothing consumption feeds the way these women are treated at work.
