Garment Solidarity Project at the East Side Freedom Library
To expand upon my Garment Solidarity Pennants installation at the East Side Freedom Library, I invited a team of sewists, people who are artists and activists in their own right, to participate with me in a performance on the grounds of the East Side Freedom Library. We collectively expressed solidarity with garment workers around the world by sewing the common clothing of garment workers in Bangladesh—the Shalwar Kameez. After an hour of sewing, the public joined the sewists for a conversation about the relationships between garment workers’ rights and climate change and our role in addressing these issues.
